Selected works The Akabeko (Aizu dialect for "red cow") is a papier mache folk toy from the Aizu region in the shape of a red cow with. Its head is suspended by a string that lets it bob in a cute way. Okiagari-koboushi (getting-up little priest) is a traditional Japanese folk toy which has long been cherished in Aizu as a good luck charm. The way the Okiagari-koboushi always rights itself when knocked down is considered to be a symbol of perseverance and resilience. Aizu hariko is made using a wooden form and papir mache. Having been made the same way for generations, these traditional toys are today painted with complex, colorful patterns. |
